Why yoga?

why yogaAfter hearing about the benefits of yoga, I began taking hot yoga classes in 2004 as a way to supplement my workout routine.  Gradually realizing the impact yoga had on my happiness, outlook and general wellbeing, I began to deepen my practice over time, becoming serious about it in 2012.  I have found that practicing yoga allows me to serve myself, making me a kinder and more peaceful person who in turn can serve others by spreading that peace and sense of self-acceptance.

For many of us, yoga begins with the physical (asana) practice.  It is through asana that we are able to make a deeper connection between our bodies and minds, thereby experiencing the true essence of what is meant by the all-encompassing word “yoga.”  The goal is that eventually the ideas learned during our physical practice actually transcend the mat, allowing us to bring presence, awareness and gratitude into our everyday lives.

Practicing with Alexis is joyful. Her classes are dynamic, energizing and fun. I love the way she presents a challenge and makes it attainable for all levels. She is very attentive to position and corrects you when necessary. Her cues are easy to follow and she always offers an alternative to any pose. I really enjoy her dynamic spirit and her smile is infectious.

I’m new to yoga so I feel very blessed that I found Alexis, who has taught me the correct way from the beginning. Her attention to good form, correct posture and the breathing techniques is necessary to feel the full benefit of a yoga class. The energy in the class is always positive and I always leave feeling refreshed, renewed and revitalized. After many years of inflexibility, I’m now feeling more flexible and confident in my ability to achieve success with the guidance of Alexis. I highly recommend trying a yoga class with Alexis whether you are a beginner or a seasoned yogi, you will not be disappointed. The quotes at the beginning and end of each practice often resonate with my feeling allowing an even deeper appreciation of yoga.

I know it seems really cheesy to say, but yoga with Alexis has really, truly, actually changed my life. Her vinyasa classes have increased my strength, stamina, and flexibility, and her yin classes have fostered my personal growth. Thanks to Alexis, I can do things I never thought I could, like a full wheel (backbend) and sirsasana (headstand), and I approach my life off the mat with increased compassion and patience. I especially enjoy the special touches that are part of her classes, like her use of an inspiring quote to open practice and her use of a light jasmine/lavender during final savasana. (Her playlists are also killer!)

Alexis is a natural teacher, coach, and mentor—she gets to know you individually/personally and adapts, challenges, and encourages based on where you are in your practice that day. Thanks to her teaching, I have seen improvement week after week both on and off my mat. Maya Angelou said, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I think a true testament to Alexis’ talent is how she makes me feel like I’m having a private lesson even in a class full of 20 or 30 people. Really, honestly, truly, yoga with her has improved my life.
